Judge to hold juror names longer at Blago retrial
CHICAGO (AP) _ The judge in Rod Blagojevich's corruption case wants to spare jurors an immediate onslaught of media attention when the ex-governor's second trial ends. Judge James Zagel said at a Wednesday status hearing he would release the names of jurors at a retrial planned for January only 24 hours after any verdict.
At the first trial, Zagel released them within hours after jurors convicted Blagojevich on one count of lying to the FBI. They deadlocked on 23 other counts. Reporters scrambled to interview jurors by phone or at their homes to find out why they became bogged down on most charges.
Zagel didn't explain in detail why he decided to keep the names under wraps longer. He would only say the decision was based on the experience some jurors had at the initial trial.
